As a dietitian and expecting mother,
I have come to see wellness in a new light. It’s empowering as well as humbling to know that what we eat, what we do and how we live is not just for our own health, but a part of a greater good. Having worked with mothers in my private practice as well as embarking on this new role myself, I have realized that there are a few elements that are key to the well-being of a mother and her family.
1) Nourish yourself. In order to be take care of your family, you have to take care of yourself. Moms often take a backseat to their own health with the intention of putting others first. However, it’s difficult to build a home without a strong foundation. Whether it’s a 10-minute workout, a few moments of deep breathing in a quiet room, or making a nourishing meal for yourself, taking care of your own health and well being will help pave the best path for your family.
2) Model behavior. Not only are you worth it as a woman to take care of yourself, but it’s important to show your children that self-care is not selfish. How many of you catch yourself by surprise when you find yourself saying or doing something just as your parents? Our behavior becomes the fabric of who your children become so we must lead by example.
3) Make wellness a family affair. The beauty of wellness is that it doesn’t have to be a solo journey. Taking your little ones on long walks to the park or preparing a healthy meal together can be fun ways to get the whole family involved in health.
